Planned redundancies in network design, monitoring tool access, and overlapping filters during traffic capture and aggregation are typical causes of analytics, security, or WAN acceleration tools receiving multiple, duplicate packets.
Duplicate packets create challenges for IT and security personnel, including:
- Over-subscribed bandwidth on a monitoring tool’s receiving port
- Wasted monitoring tool resources
- False positive errors
- Compromised data analytics
VSS' De-duplication feature reduces the volume of traffic to analytics, and security tools. This increases tools' efficiencies, reduces poor data analytics and false error generation, and closes security holes. VSS provides users with six different de-duplication capability types. These support de-duplication either before or after aggregation, filters, and/or load-balancing is applied to the traffic. Chassis shipping with Packet De-duplication also include traffic statistics for counting unique, duplicate, and total packet throughput.
