Corporations have grown their networks to reach their end-users. This growth has increased the cost and complexity of monitoring end-user applications. Each time a new site is opened, new infrastructure and monitoring equipment are required. If monitoring equipment isn't installed, then operations personnel must travel to the sites and troubleshoot when problems arise.
Installing the multitude of applications and servers required into hundreds or even thousands of sites can prove very costly and lead to failure of a monitoring project, or, worse, a partial deployment. VSS Monitoring's Distributed Traffic Capture System™ (DTCS) approach alleviates and can eliminate the need to deploy tools in each site by backhauling traffic to a central point of monitoring.
Enterprise campuses often have Intermediate Distrribution Frames (IDF) located throughout floors or in disparate locations. These IDFs contain all of the wiring and switches for a particular area. Locating a sniffer or application monitoring tool in each IDF is extremely costly, but there may be no other way to get visibility to the traffic which is located within a single closet and may be the source of users’ complaints. By placing a VSS Distributed Traffic Capture device in these closets, companies can now centralize the monitoring of each location by redirecting the aggregated traffic and monitoring the data at the center, rather than in an isolated distributed fashion. This helps reduce mean time to repair (MTTR) by eliminating any point that may not currently be monitored and provides the necessary points of isolation, filtering, and aggregation that companies have been looking for, but were unable to find, before VSS introduced its Distributed Traffic Capture approach.
Hardware-Based Filtering and selective aggregation are at the heart of VSS Monitoring's Distributed Traffic Capture System. VSS Monitoring has a complete line of optical and copper taps, featuring LinkSafe™ and vAs™ to ensure reliability. VSS products range from low density 10/100 inline and span capture taps to the most feature and port-dense Gigabit and 10 GigE solutions available on the market. Additionally, due to the focus on rack-density, VSS has incorporated newer, LC-type connectors to lower the footprint of each unit to a single rack unit featuring up to 36 ports.
