You are probably upgrading your network infrastructure to 10G as traffic loads continue to increase and as technologies like 10 GigE become more economical. The problem is how to transition your network intelligence infrastructure for these faster link speeds and higher throughputs.
Many analytic tools and security tools are limited to 1G, and the select tools available for 10G are significantly more expensive than 1G tools. A proven solution to this problem is to deploy the VSS Network Packet Broker System to accurately use existing 1G tools on 10G links.
VSS systems provide more than the 10G to 1G interface conversion required. While basic TAP devices and network switches lack the filtering and load balancing capabilities necessary to prevent oversubscription of 1G tools, the VSS systems use selective hardware-based filtering, high data burst buffers and session-aware load balancing to make sure tools receive the specific traffic they need to see (e.g. from specific VLANs), and that no packets are lost to oversubscription.
Using these advanced filtering and packet optimization capabilities, the VSS system can filter selected traffic from 10G links and route only the traffic of interest to the tools. Thus, tools receive all of the required traffic at full line rates through one or more 1G interfaces.
The benefits of the VSS approach are:
- Apply 1G tools to 10G links without sacrificing accuracy
- Avoid or delay costly upgrades to 10G tools
- Eliminate tool oversubscription
- Allow for easy, economical expansion as needs grow
Selective Hardware-Based Filtering, High Data Burst Buffers, and Session-Aware Load Balancing are some of the many capabilities performed in the VSS Traffic Processing Engine. The VSS Traffic Processing Engine is a key component of the VSS IntelliScale Architecture, and the primary differentiator of VSS Network Packet Broker Systems.
