Whether you’re a gamer or a professional looking to upgrade their productivity you probably have an interest in getting the best 40 inch 4k monitor you can for your work or entertaining.

Those of you who are photographers and photo editors don't necessarily have to go with 40inch size or 4K resolution: you can settle for a monitor for photo editing on a budget.

For those who don't know, the term 4k refers to the horizontal scale of your PC screen's resolution meaning the first part of the resolution is approximately 4,000. Resolution refers to the scale of your display and the most important thing to know about it is that the bigger the numbers associated with your resolution, the clearer your images should be when viewed on that display or screen. Why Go for 40 inch 4K Monitors?

Bigger is better, right? When it comes to size, some users are perfectly happy with HDR screens of average size.In all seriousness, there are two parts of this question to dissect. Why go for a 40-inch monitor and why go for a 4k monitor? The two are not inherently linked so it is important to discuss them separately before discussing them together to provide the best advice for picking out the best 40 inch 4k monitor for you. Some features like touch screen obviously fall under different category but for those you can check out our touch screen monitor reviews

The primary reason you would want a 40-inch monitor is because it is a truly massive screen size. Having a screen this large provides a greater amount of screen real estate for you to work with which is especially important if you are opposed to using multiple monitors at the same time, because it gives you more space to separate each application into on your single screen. Also, if you want to easily connect multiple devices at the same time, look for the best USB C monitor.

The larger your screen is, the more applications you can look at simultaneously which provides an increase in productivity that you would have a hard time finding on a smaller screen. Screen size is usually measured in inches from one corner to another diagonally across a PC monitor. This means that a 40 inch monitor is 40 inches across from bottom-left corner to top-right corner. In case you want to settle for something smaller, check out some of these top monitors for graphic designers.

Having a 4k monitor can be very important if you work professionally with content creation, image editing or video production because an increase in resolution provides an increase in image quality. The previous standard was 1080p or 1920 by 1080 resolution. With a 4k resolution, which most of computer monitors for movies have, the video and picture quality you watch will be much clearer and you will be capable of noticing things that wouldn't have been visible at a lower resolution.  This is why I also recommend our best monitors for video editing reviews.

4.9/5

This is a 43-inch, 42.5-inch visible, monitor from LG. The display has a 16:9 aspect ratio and it is capable of producing a resolution of 3840 by 2160 with a 60 Hertz refresh rate. The panel type is an In-Plane Switching or IPS type. It supports High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) version 2.2 which protects against your digital video or audio content being copied as it travels.

It also has on-screen controls for the screen split feature which is especially handy if you are working with an operating system that does not already implement that feature. This should certainly help with increasing productivity.

It has USB type C connectivity already implemented into the monitor itself and ships with 4 HDMI ports for connecting to your system of choice.

It is a flat screen that does not support FreeSync technology or tilt. It has speakers built into the frame and they are surprisingly good for monitor speakers.

If you are using them for entertainment like gaming or listening to music you should probably get some specialized speakers for that, but these work in a pinch and they are some of the best built-in speakers I've ever heard.

This best monitor has a response time of 5 milliseconds. This not so fast response time combined with its 60 Hertz refresh rate leaves this monitor at the very bottom end of performance concerning gaming experience and motion blur, but the visual clarity should be unmatched by anything that a 1080p monitor could produce.

There are some downsides to this monitor. The lack of DisplayPort inputs holds this monitor back greatly as those are the preferred inputs for the best 4k monitor. It also has a fairly narrow viewing angle. Looking directly at the monitor works great but if I try to look from the side I get shadows along the borders that might cover necessary parts of the user interface.

This bundle comes with the previous monitor entry as well as a 6-outlet surge adapter, a night light, a 6-foot high-speed HDMI cable, and a large bottle of universal screen cleaner. A great deal and well worth it for the security that it will provide for your 4k computer monitor.

If you decide to go with the previous LG monitor then this bundle should provide all the tools you need to keep a 40 inch computer monitor well-maintained and protected from problems like power surges and outages.

A surge protector is a very important piece of equipment, mine has saved my computer from power surges several times and every time I have been thankful to not have to pay large sums of money for replacement parts.

This is a curved screen monitor option from LG that is 49 inches in size and the aspect ratio is 32:9. The resolution displayed on this monitor is 5120 by 1440 at a 60 Hertz refresh rate. The type of monitor is an In-Plane Switching (IPS panel) which should serve excellently for image and video editing work. I reviewed more top-rated 1440p computer monitors.

The massive scale of this monitor lends itself well to increasing productivity in a professional capacity while also providing a vast expanse of screen real estate for hobby work and multiple windows.

This monitor has a 5-millisecond response time which makes it, combined with the 60 Hertz refresh rate, on the lower end of gaming monitors, but it is extremely large and has a curved screen which means it supports larger resolutions for greater image clarity. This could be a good option for a good gaming experience if you have your heart set on a 40” monitor with a 4k resolution. The picture quality and contrast ratio is great, too.

It has 2 HDMI inputs as well as a Display Port input for connectivity. As a bonus it also has a headphone output and a USB type C port. This gives it a variety of inputs and outputs and makes it a very versatile monitor.

The stand that the monitor is shipped with supports height adjustment, tilting and swivel. It is fair to say that monitors that swivel are quite uncommon when it comes to 4k monitors of this size.

The monitor is VESA compatible and can be mounted on a wall, but you should be careful with this as the monitor is very heavy. Make sure to purchase mounting equipment that can handle the weight of this beast.

This monitor ships with built-in speakers that are surprisingly functional for monitor speakers. They can serve well enough if you don’t have anything else but specialized, separate speakers are preferred for most uses.

Overall, this large screen monitor is an excellent option for widescreen use and should serve very well in a variety of uses if you want a curved 40-inch-plus monitor for your primary display.

Another option from Philips Computer Monitors and, much like the last one, it is a 43-inch, 42.51-inch viewable, monitor with a 16:9 aspect ratio. This one also has a 3840 by 2160 screen resolution and a 60 Hertz refresh rate. It is an In-Plane Switching (IPS) style monitor and has support for viewing over 1 billion accurate colors which should significantly aid professional work with picture and video editing or viewing, because the image quality is great.

This option’s response time is higher at 5 milliseconds which makes it slightly worse for gaming than the other Philips Computer Monitors option though not by much. If you are a gamer looking at this for your primary monitor it isn't recommended but should work alright in a casual setting.

This monitor supports Philips MultiView technology which allows both Picture-by-Picture with 4 inputs and Picture-in-picture with 2 inputs. If the snapping feature of the Windows 10 operating system isn’t enough for you then this will certainly kick your multitasking and productivity up a notch.

It has speakers built-in and there are 4 USB 3.0 ports on the back of this ideal monitor, one of which is fast charging support, which makes the monitor even more versatile and useful. I found the fast-charging USB ports to be great for charging my phone.

This ViewSonic monitor is 43 inches, 42.5 visible, with a 16:9 aspect ratio. It is capable of producing a resolution of 3840 by 2160 and a 60 Hertz refresh rate. The panel type is an In-Plane Switching or IPS type. It is designed for wall mounting but ships with a stand for those that aren't interested in wall-mounting.

The large screen comes enhanced with a Blue-light, anti glare coating, Filter and Flicker-free technology so you don’t have to be concerned with prolonged use damaging your eyes or having to contend with eye strain and fatigue. On this topic, you may be interested in the best monitor for eye strain. The overall picture quality is great too.

The connectivity ports featured include HDMI 2.0, USB type C port and DisplayPort inputs,  as well as one Mini DisplayPort, like most monitors. This is excellent news because DisplayPort inputs are the preferred and recommended option for connecting 4k monitors to your system and other devices.

ViewSonic has a proprietary program that works with this monitor called Multipicture which allows for up to four split windows to be viewed simultaneously which could be especially handy if you aren't using an operating system with that functionality built-in.

The large monitor has an eco-mode feature for saving energy and complies with energy star 7.0 and EPEAT certification. This should help to save power which could be handy in a power outage by helping to ensure a backup power supply will last as long as possible.

This monitor responds with a time of 12-milliseconds which is extremely poor for gaming. This monitor is not highly recommended for a gaming enthusiast that plans to use this for that purpose. I found the delay to be very noticeable and inconvenient while gaming.

Tilt is supported in a minor capacity. You can tilt your screen five degrees backward or twelve degrees forward. There is no height adjustment functionality.

In short, this monitor is a good option to enhance and boost productivity with an increase in screen real estate for the price offered, but it is not recommended for use with serious gaming. It has a variety of connectivity options and is energy efficient.

This monitor, courtesy of Philips Computer 4k Monitors, has a 43-inch, 42.51-inch viewable, screen size with a 16:9 aspect ratio. It can support a resolution of 3840 by 2160 with a 60 Hertz refresh rate. The type of monitor is a Multidomain Vertical Alignment (MVA) so it is versatile and capable of being used for a variety of purposes.

It has a 4 millisecond fast response time which is the best on this list but still low for gaming performance. The 60 Hertz refresh rate and this response time together make for a low-end gaming monitor but the added visual clarity of the higher resolution could make up for that in non-competitive gaming.

It is capable of tilt from negative 5 degrees to 10 degrees forward. It is also capable of height adjustment and swivel. All of that together makes for many possibilities for creative ways to place this on a desk to maximize workspace and provide the best viewing angle for your specific situation

Regarding connectivity, there are a variety of inputs and outputs to choose from. The monitor has an HDMI port, one DisplayPort, a DVI-D, USB C port and a VGA. That is a lot of backward-compatibility and a lot of versatility for a monitor this new.

It is High Dynamic Range (HDR) compatible which should make for stunning visual clarity and combined with the 4k resolution should make for a very eye-catching look to any images, movies, or games you view.

Something you may experience when using this is a rapid burn-in effect though I haven’t seen any signs that it is permanent. It is recommended that you be careful with how long you keep a static image on the screen and remember not to leave the monitor on when not in use.

This is Dell’s answer to the 43-inch, 42.51-inch viewable, 4k monitor and it delivers with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a supported resolution of 3840 by 2160 at 60 Hertz, so it has a good picture quality. It is an In-Plane Switching (IPS) type monitor so it should provide a highly color accuracy and image quality for professional video and photo editing work, as well as content creation.

Dell's monitor has a high response time at 8 milliseconds, not ideal for gaming especially with a 60 Hertz refresh rate. You could probably get by with this for casual, hobby gaming but if you are a serious gamer then you will notice the low response times when gaming competitively.

I found this large monitor to be manageable for playing games that didn’t require a fast reaction time but forget trying to play an FPS with this monitor.

This monitor comes with two HDMI ports, a DisplayPort, a Mini Display Port, and a VGA port as options for connectivity. Be careful using the HDMI ports or the VGA because they will only allow a 30 Hertz refresh rate which is less than ideal for a lot of uses.

One of the downsides of this particular monitor is that it will have some minor edge shadows when viewed from certain angles but it shouldn't be an issue when looking at it head-on. Another downside is that the audio input is non-functional unless you are using the VGA port.

The internal speakers on this monitor are surprisingly good though much like with any other monitor they are not ideal for primary audio use and should only be used as a backup in case of some kind of equipment failure or lacking any other option.

Altogether, this is a decent option as a primary display for professional work if you are interested in enhancing your multi-tasking capabilities and increasing your productivity.

4K vs UHD Specs

4K Specifications

  • "Ultra High-Definition", or "Ultra HD have an aspect ratio of at least 16:9
  • Can present native video at a minimum resolution of 4096 x 2,160 pixels.
  • 4K UHDTV (2160p) is 4096 pixels wide by 2160 pixels tall (8.3 megapixels), which is four times more pixels than 1920 x 1080 (2.1 megapixels).
  • Compared to 8K, 8K UHDTV (4320p) is 7680 pixels wide by 4320 pixels tall (33 megapixels), which is sixteen times more pixels than current 1080p HDTV, which brings it closer to the detail level of 15/70 mm IMAX.

Ultra HD Specs

  • UHD is a resolution of 3840 pixels × 2160 lines (8.3 megapixels, aspect
    ratio 16:9)
  • UHD is one of the two resolutions of ultra high definition television targeted towards consumer television
  • FUHD  is 7680 pixels × 4320 lines (33.2 megapixels). UHD has twice the horizontal and vertical resolution of the 1080p HDTV format, with four times as many pixels overall.

40-Inch Monitors vs. Traditional Monitors

If you were to compare a 40-inch monitor to a traditional monitor in terms of general form and function, you likely wouldn’t be able to tell much of a difference. A 40-inch monitor doesn’t operate in ways different than a standard office computer monitor, although, you might see the difference in size compared to a high-end 38-inch monitor. But, you’ll have to look closely.

There is one major difference between 40-inch monitors and traditional computer monitors, though, and that comes into play when you consider the aspect ratio of the display. Most flatscreen monitors offer a 16:9 aspect ratio, which is considered optimal on many of the leading widescreen monitors. Most 40-inch monitors have a 21:9 ultrawide aspect ratio.

You gain a lot more horizontal room with a 21:9 aspect ratio than you do with a 16:9 aspect ratio. You can more easily multitask with larger displays like these since you can arrange full-size windows side by side. The ideal professional monitors are 40-inch displays because of this characteristic alone.

It's also important to remember that a lot of ultrawide monitors have curved screens. With an ultrawide setup, it can be challenging to view everything on the screen without constantly rotating your head. Check out the trendiest curved gaming monitors now on the market since a curved screen solves this issue.

Gaming and Entertainment Performance Of 40 Inch Monitors

If you are a gaming or streaming enthusiast then you will likely hear the term “4k resolution” mentioned very frequently. This is because having a 4k gaming monitor enhances the visual quality of games and streams that you play or watch.

If you are gaming then this will provide an opportunity to notice things that you otherwise wouldn't have been able to which can have a proportional increase to your performance in a competitive scenario for those that are fans of MOBAs like League of Legends or FPS shooters like Call of Duty. It could also enhance your enjoyment of visual aspects of the environment or characters that wouldn't be casually apparent at a lower resolution for those that are fans of RPGs like Dragon Age or Mass Effect.

HDR media Support

High Dynamic Range (HDR) is the current new kid on the block for Visual Technologies in television and gaming. The term may be familiar to those that have a working knowledge of photography. Essentially it is the process of making images as close to the visual clarity of the human eye as possible.

Mostly this is accomplished by enhancing the ability to represent the transition between darkness and light and their effect on colors. Using High Dynamic Range should provide an increase to visual quality and make colors stand out without negatively affecting light or shadows.

Viewing Distance

The distance between you and the monitor you are viewing will affect your ability to distinguish the difference in the quality of the images of a 4k monitor. The larger a monitor is, the further away you can be from it before you stop noticing the increase in quality. A 40 inch 4k monitor will give you a few feet of optimal viewing distance before it is indistinguishable from a High Definition (HD) display.

Connectivity

The preferred method of connecting a 4k monitor to your system is through a DisplayPort cable. Unfortunately, there are some unreliable DisplayPort cables out there so you will have to be particularly careful about using any that come with your monitor and make sure that they are certified DisplayPort cables.

Some 4k monitors will support HDMI cables, but there is the unfortunate circumstance of HDMI version 1.4 locking your refresh rates to 30 Hertz which isn’t good. You’ll want to make sure that you are using an HDMI 2.0 or better to ensure a good refresh rate on your monitor.

Any Drawbacks of Large Monitors?

If your monitor is too large you may have to sit a little further away than you are used to to avoid having to turn your head to see certain parts of the screen.

Larger 4k monitors also take up more space which can be a problem if you don’t have a lot of desk space to work with. This could be mitigated by wall-mounting your monitor if that option is available to you.

They are also not typically great for gaming since they have lower refresh rates - it's almost impossible to find a good 120hz monitor at this size.

FAQs:

1. What is the best 40 inch 4k monitor?

Here are the 3 Top 40 Inch 4K Monitors that we can recommend.

1. LG 43UN700-B 43 Inch Class Ultra HD (UHD) -
This is a 43-inch, 42.5-inch visible, monitor from LG. The display has a 16:9 aspect ratio and it is capable of producing a resolution of 3840 by 2160 with a 60 Hertz refresh rate.
2. LG 43” IPS Ultra HD (UHD) 4K Monitor -
This bundle comes with the previous monitor entry as well as a 6-outlet surge adapter, a night light, a 6-foot high-speed HDMI cable, and a large bottle of universal screen cleaner.
3. LG 49WL95C-W 49-Inch Curved 32: 9 Ultrawide Dqhd IPS with HDR10 -
This is a curved monitor option from LG that is 49 inches in size and the wider aspect ratio is 32:9. The resolution displayed on this monitor is 5120 by 1440 at a 60 Hertz refresh rate.

2. Is 4K overkill for 27-inch?

Yes, suppose your vision is corrected to 20/20. In that case, 2-inch 4K is acceptable unless the monitor is more than a meter/3ft away. Individuals assert 27-inch is too small because they're squinting at a FOV of 3840 pixels wide while sitting 1-2 meters away from the monitor.

3. Is 4K noticeable on a 27-inch monitor?

4K appears tiny on a 27-inch screen, and anything other than games and movies may require excessive squinting due to the size reduction. 1440p is a far superior resolution for this size, while a 32-inch 4K display is far superior if you genuinely desire the extra pixels.

4. Is 4K better than 144Hz?

4K resolution is better than 144Hz because it results in a sharper image and allows for more frames per second. Generally speaking, the higher the resolution of a display, the sharper the image will be. This is because there are more pixels to display the image, which results in a finer level of detail. Additionally, many gamers prefer to play games at a higher frame rate (144Hz or above) in order to reduce input lag and create a smoother gaming experience.

5. What size monitor is best for 4K?

The optimal monitor size is determined primarily by the monitor's resolution and the distance between you and the screen. In general, most people believe that 1920x1080 should not be used on displays larger than 25 inches; 1440p is ideal for displays larger than 27 inches; and 4K is ideal for displays larger than 27 inches to 43 inches, depending on personal preference.
