For a tighter budget, you should consider my best gaming monitor under 300 USD reviews. For light gaming on the go, we reviewed cool portable monitors.

Before we get started with more reviews to find the best gaming monitor for your needs, I’d like to share with you some important factors that go into gaming monitors unlike more general cool features for most PC monitors I reviewed. Armed with this information, you’re sure to find the gaming monitor under 500 dollars just for you.

Gaming Monitors Under 500 USD – What to Look For

Believe it or not, there’s a lot more that makes a gaming monitor besides visuals. As video games get progressively more advanced, the need for computer monitors to keep up has never been greater.

Gone are the days when you could just hook up anything with a screen. You’re doing your games and the system they are on a great disservice by not investing in the proper monitor.

Back in my day (here we go), all that mattered was whether the screen had color. Our video game tapes didn’t have the high-resolution graphics that you see today (although we sure thought they did).

Now, games run at frame rates that resemble real life. This is just one of the reasons image quality of the monitors are necessary. Known as refresh rate, this feature enables each frame from your game to be drawn in quick succession.

The faster a monitor can do this, the better your game is going to look on-screen. But that’s not all. Response time is just as important. This feature can make or break your gameplay experience.

It is what’s responsible for input lag, or lack thereof. The better the response time, the more fluid your immersive experience will be.

Another aspect that has gotten increasingly prevalent is resolution. Games are now hitting the 4K mark, meaning those cutting-edge 1080p monitors of yesteryear no longer provide the visual accuracy they once did.

Now, it’s true that not everyone needs a 4K gaming monitor. Very few systems can actually run 4K games, and there is very limited software anyway (although it’s certainly growing).

As older-generation PC gamers, we didn’t worry about the effects games might have on our vision. But as studies have shown, it’s important to protect your eyes as much as possible while playing.

Thankfully, there are plenty of gaming monitors that are equipped with preventative features that allow us to play longer, safer.

For your consideration, I made sure to include a good portion of monitors that do just that. Let’s take a closer look at some of the previous gaming features I mentioned so that you know exactly what to keep an eye out for.

Let me just get this right out of the way: the LG 27UK650-W 27 inch monitor is one of the best monitors under 500 bucks that you’ll find. What makes it such a winner?

The first thing that stood out to me was its exceptional peak brightness. There’s something about the LG 27UK650-W’s 27 inch monitor bright display that brings visuals to life.

Colors are also represented with amazing realism. I noticed my games looked absolutely phenomenal on this screen.

Combined with its amazing proclivity for eliminating any input lag, the 27UK650-W 27 inch monitor is a worthy investment that you’d be wise to consider.

I love the ultrawide monitor viewing angles, too. This is a great feature for those who like to have some friends over for side-by-side competitive gaming. When you factor in the sharp resolution, the 27UK650-W 27 inch monitor is a gamer’s dream come true.

As darling as this monitor under 500 USD is, there are a couple of things you should take into account. Playing games in pitch-black environments makes the display’s lack of good image quality black levels really apparent.

Blacks appear rather grey, detracting from certain PC games’ presentation. You also won’t notice much of a distinction in HDR. I found it was best to stick with HDMI, as colors look much better.

Still, if you don’t mind the occasional grey misrepresentation, LG’s 27UK650-W is a solid gaming monitor under 500 USD that won’t disappoint. It’s dropped in price in recent months, too, making this a great buy.

LG 27UK650-W Pros

  • Immersive visuals
  • Great contrast ratio
  • Vivid colors
  • Borderless

LG 27UK650-W Cons

  • Stand could be stronger

Wow. Now this is a fantastic bargain. If you’ve been on the hunt for an affordable gaming monitor that delivers the visual goods, you’ll be blown away by the CRG5 (see monitors for under 200 dollars).

It is easily the best monitor under 500 bucks to dip well below the price point. This 240Hz monitor offers so much graphical flare that you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a premium gaming monitor.

Thanks to G-Sync technology, you can look forward to your games displaying without tears or inconsistencies. Colors are vivid and accurate, bringing games to life with incredible realism.

I was pleasantly surprised by the contrast ratio and deep levels of black. This is largely due to Samsung’s decision to go with a VA panel. It is able to block backlighting from getting through, resulting in incredibly rich graphics.

Equally impressive is the 240Hz refresh rate. Even high-FPS games look fluid and smooth in their performance. If realism is what you’re after, the CRG5 delivers it in spades.

There’s something special about this monitor’s ability to draw you into your games. This is the kind of performance that you’d expect to pay big bucks for. And yet it’s one of the least expensive monitors I reviewed.

Input lag is virtually eliminated altogether, and gameplay feels responsive and accurate. When you factor in the sizable, curved screen display, you’re getting a more immersive gaming experience that’s worth a look.

I have to note that there were certain PC games that resulted in occasional ghosting. It certainly isn’t enough to be a deal-breaker, but it’s there nonetheless.

Also, you’ll need to have your own independent sound system, as there aren’t built-in speakers with this unit.

When you consider everything else the CRG5 excels at, a  minimal ghosting here and there isn’t a big deal. And most serious competitive gamers already have their own speakers.

Aside from these minor caveats, you’re getting what is otherwise an exceptional and competitive gaming monitor under 500 USD.

Samsung CRG5 Pros

  • Low input lag
  • Solid design
  • Nice price
  • Attractive

Samsung CRG5 Cons

  • Occasional ghosting in certain games

Looking for the best gaming monitor under 500 USD that’s equipped with eye care technology? Then allow me to introduce you to ViewSonic’s XG3220.

If you’re the type of gamer who spends a lot of time in front of a gaming screen, you’ll definitely want to give the XG3220 some serious consideration. I can assure you that it makes a big distinction in the overall health of your eyes.

Not only that, you’ll be able to play longer without feeling fatigued. If you’re active on something like Twitch, this feature alone is worth the price of admission.

ViewSonic also delivers in the visual department. You’re getting sharp, 4K resolution that brings games to life in startling detail. If you own a high-end gaming system, you owe it to yourself to enjoy it the way it was meant to be enjoyed.

Another big plus is the rock-solid build-quality. The XG3220 is one tough-looking gaming monitor. It has a modern visual appeal, and excellent construction to back it up.

ViewSonic included an RGB LED light in the stand that’s directly below the computer monitor. This serves to give the XG3220 an extra bit of flair that makes it stand out among a sea of me-too monitors.

Even better, you’re treated to a pair of 5-watt speakers that are built into the computer monitor. This is great for those who have yet to invest in a serious sound system. They deliver enough clear image quality, tunes and effects to get you through till then.

Looking for more reasons to nab this worthy contender? The XG3220 supports AMD FreeSync, meaning your games look accurate and tear-free. My testing proved this to be a must-have feature for anyone who is serious about gaming.

For a computer monitor that offers so much, there’s no doubt as to why it earned third place. If it only had consistent black levels, the XG3220 would have likely scored even higher. Still, I didn’t find this minor issue to be a deal-breaker by any means.

ViewSonic XG3220 Pros

  • Balanced contrast
  • Wall mount-ready
  • Easy on the eyes
  • Beautiful display

ViewSonic XG3220 Cons

  • Inconsistent black levels

Features:

  • FreeSync-ready for tear-free gameplay
  • Peak brightness for better clarity
  • Rich accurate colors produce better visuals
  • Wall-mountable to free up space

Samsung once again makes an appearance, and for good reason. The U28H750 is a nicely-sized 4K gaming monitor that delivers where it matters most. It sports a QLED screen and TN panels for smooth, accurate gameplay.

I fired up a few games that ran at high frame rates to see if this stunning monitor could truly hang. And hang, it did. There’s virtually zero lag during gameplay, at least none that I noticed. And graphically-speaking, the U28H750 produces some mighty-fine visuals.

If you’re tired of your dated monitor leaving funky blurring effects in your games, the U28H750 will be an entirely new experience. It’s akin to Dorothy first seeing color in The Wizard of Oz.

Games look almost surreal in their movement, adding a sense of realism only seen in the real world. And when you factor in the incredibly rich visual accuracy, it’s an experience you won’t soon forget.

With all that being said, TN panel displays aren’t perfect. Unlike their IPS brethren, colors aren’t always accurate. As is common among the latter, you’re sacrificing graphical precision for performance.

But don’t let that deter you from giving the U28H750 a look. You’re still getting one heck of an upgrade, especially if you’re using an older monitor to play your games on. The distinction is stark, and the price only makes it even more compelling.

And I have to admit, the colors that are presented on the U28H750 look pretty darn impressive. Can you see better elsewhere? Sure, but considering the TN panel’s exceptional handling of motion, it’s a well-balanced unit.

You’ll need to provide your own sound, although a headphone jack is available if you prefer to go that route.

As a minor aside, if you typically play alone, you’ll be quite pleased with the U28H750. But if you often play with friends present, you might want to look elsewhere.

This is because looking at the great monitor from the side loses clarity, another issue with TN panels. In short, it’s great for single-player gameplay when looking straight on. But anything else might lead to frustration.

Samsung U28H750 Pros

  • Good screen size
  • Adjustable stand
  • Sharp graphics
  • Slim design

Samsung U28H750 Cons

  • TN panel limits viewing angles

Features:

  • Curved monitor delivers incredible immersion
  • Fully-adjustable perfect monitor stand for any viewing angles
  • FreeSync reduces gaming screen tears.
  • Vivid colors produce more realistic visuals
  • Low response time reduces gaming lag

Samsung is back yet again, this time with the C32HG70. I included this beefy monitor due to its massive screen real estate and crystal-clear visuals. But that’s not all there is to the C32HG70.

It is one of the few best gaming monitors under 500 dollars that sports a curved monitor. And let me tell you right now, it looks absolutely stunning. The colors alone are enough to dazzle your eyeballs, and yet there’s plenty more to amaze.

Thanks to AMD FreeSync, games look brilliant in their motion, and there’s screen tearing to speak of. Combined with a 144-hertz refresh rate, high-FPS games like Call of Duty, CS:GO or Titanfall are delivered with speed and accuracy.

Even the response time is impressive. At just 1 millisecond, any input lag is virtually eliminated. This ensures that your gaming experience is frustration-free and enjoyable.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the amazing stand on the C32HG70. You’re getting what looks like a giant robot arm that extends out of the back of the monitor. It pivots, swings, and adjusts to any position you like for optimal viewing.

Samsung added an LED ring on the back of the monitor where the arm attaches. It’s a nice touch that gives the C32HG70 character. Not that it needs it, though, as it’s already one mean-looking machine.

You may also mount it to the wall, if you so desire. The 31.5-inch monitor display looks brilliant in any location, making the C32HG70 a highly-versatile and high quality monitor that any gamer would be pleased to have.

So, you’re probably wondering why I didn’t rank it higher. Well, it’s not quite 4K, although its 2560 x 1440 resolution looks incredible as it is.

And I noticed some minor ghosting effects in certain games. It’s nothing too distracting or annoying, but it’s an issue that’s not as prevalent in the previous entries.

Samsung C32HG70 Pros

  • Beautiful LED lighting
  • Exceptional stand
  • Smooth motion
  • Large screen

Samsung C32HG70 Cons

  • Ghosting in some games

4.4/5

Much like the last entry this monitor has a 75 Hz refresh rate which means, if you are gaming, you might find yourself suffering from screen tearing or visual stutters but this monitor implements FreeSync for those users that use an AMD Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) which locks your monitor’s refresh rate to the frames per second of the game you are playing. This should eliminate those problems which also removes any problem you might have with the refresh rate.

This monitor comes with a 2 millisecond response time which should further assist you with gaming and other endeavors. A 2 millisecond response time is extremely fast which means you shouldn’t notice any delay at all and anything you do that is displayed on this monitor should happen rapidly.

If you’re on a tight budget but in need of a quality gaming monitor, look no further than to the Omen 25. One of many Omen products in HP’s line, the 25 is a lightning-fast gaming monitor that is well-worth its asking price.

The build-quality and styling of this 24-inch monitor are quite nice, if not a little bland. If you don’t mind a thin, black slab, you’ll be fine with what HP brings to the table. Those who prefer a bit more character to their gaming setup will likely scoff.

But that’s not to say this isn’t a good monitor. On the contrary, it performs admirably, which will be more than enough reason for most gamers to pick this one up.

It comes with a 144-hertz refresh rate and 1 millisecond response time. This means your games look and play exceptionally well. Input lag will be a thing of the past, and high-FPS games will look fluid.

And with FreeSync at the ready, your games will be presented completely and without screen tearing. On top of that, you’re getting a level of realism that’s quite remarkable thanks to the Omen 25’s handling of contrast ratio.

Although, admittedly, blacks aren’t always displayed like they should. An anti-glare panel helps make up for this to some degree, however. And if the lighting is right in your room, you’ll hardly notice this issue.

Those who require plenty of available ports will be pleased with all that HP included. From HDMI to DisplayPort to USB 3.0, there’s enough to keep you busy.

HP Omen 25 Pros

  • Fast and responsive
  • Good viewing angles
  • Anti-glare panel
  • Stylish design

HP Omen 25 Cons

LG 32UD59-B Technical Specifications:

LG wraps things up with the 32UD59-B. This 32-inch monitor is a truly remarkable and excellent gaming monitor that gets most things right. There are some hardware limitations that factor in, however, which I’ll get to momentarily.

First up, the visuals. LG delivers 4K excellence here that earns the 32UD59-B a spot as best 4K monitor under 500 bucks. Colors look rich and vibrant, and motion is handled pretty well.

Blacks appear at their very best on this monitor thanks to exceptional contrast ratio control. There’s no pesky backlight bleeding to interfere with the visuals, resulting in both accuracy and realism.

FreeSync is on board, as well, meaning screen tearing is all but eliminated. Games look accurate and complete; just the way they were meant to be viewed.

You get access to both HDMI and DisplayPort for your connectivity needs. And the build-quality is really nice, too. You’re investing in a monitor that is made to last, that’s for sure.

Now, with all that being said, the 32UD59-B’s hardware causes some minor issues here and there. As wonderful as the visuals look, the VA panel build detracts from them when viewed any other way but straight on.

Furthermore, the 60-hertz refresh rate doesn’t give the 4K resolution the presentation it deserves. Sure, high-frame rates games look fine and all. But a slightly higher refresh rate would have made all the distinction.

I appreciate that LG included a pair of built-in speakers. This is a nice bonus for those who don’t yet have their own sound setup. They certainly won’t win any awards for clarity, but they get the job done.

LG 32UD59-B Pros

  • Excellent resolution
  • Accurate visuals
  • Wall-mountable
  • Well-built

LG 32UD59-B Cons

  • Low-quality speakers

Refresh Rate

As I pointed out a moment ago, the refresh rate feature makes all the distinction in how motion looks during gameplay. A high refresh rate means your monitor can keep up with your gaming console or gaming PC, so take a look at our 120Hz refresh rate monitor reviews.

If you’re running a game that has a high frame rate, for example, you’ll want a monitor with an equally high refresh rate. Allow me to elaborate.

Let’s say you’re playing a game that runs at 60 frames per second. Ideally, you want an excellent gaming monitor with a refresh rate of at least 60 hertz. It’s best to think of each hertz as a second. Sixty frames, 60 hertz.

However, it’s possible to display your 60-FPS game even better. If you have a 144 Hz refresh rate monitor, for example, those 60 frames per second will appear even more lifelike and fluid on-screen.

In my experience, once you have gotten used to a monitor with an exceptionally high refresh rate, it’s hard to go back to anything less.

As you’re researching gaming monitors, you want to keep a close eye out for this feature to ensure that the monitor in question is capable of doing your gaming hardware justice.

Refresh rate will often be listed under the monitor’s specifications as “60Hz”, or “144Hz”, and so on. If you’re familiar with the capabilities of your console or gaming PC, you should have a pretty good idea as to what kind of monitor you need.

I have included several entries that exceed the typical 60-hertz refresh rate. More often than not, you’re going to spend more on gaming monitors that have high refresh rate.

If you find that they are too rich for your blood, fear not. There are plenty of gaming monitors for less than 400 USD that deliver great image quality and performance.

Video Connectors Available

If you’ve been gaming for any length of time, you know how aggravating it is to be working with a monitor that has limited video connectors available.

Depending on your gaming habits, you might require more than the next person. For this reason, it’s important that you thoroughly research each potential purchase to ensure that it has enough to fit your needs.

There are several types of video connectors. Fortunately, there are only a handful needed when it comes to gaming.

The most  monitors common ports are going to be HDMI and DisplayPort. Although older PCs still require a valid VGA port. If you’re in need of a monitor that’s capable of displaying a lower-end PC, you probably don’t need a top-of-the-line unit.

You might also want to consider a monitor that has USB connectors available to help streamline your gaming setup. You’ll find a few entries below that have these and more to make things easier on you.

Panel Technology

Not all of the best computer monitors are made using the same panel technology. This variation is what allows for diversity among gaming features and gaming performance. What works best for you might not be so great for the next person, and vice-versa.

Where one might provide better visuals, another might deliver smoother gameplay. It all gets down to your personal preference.

If you’d like the best of both worlds, there is fortunately a panel for that, as well. So read on to learn which is which, and how each can benefit your casual gaming experience.

In-Plane Switching

In-Plane Switching, or IPS panel is going to be your best option if you want both visuals and gaming performance. IPS monitors are able to provide incredibly detailed visuals, including robust color and motion handling.

IPS panel is often the go-to for competitive gamers who are crazy about getting the best graphical delivery possible. Images appear vibrant and rich, making excellent use of textures and other in-game imagery.

If you’re the type of gamer who usually has friends over for competitive play, an IPS monitor is going to be your best bet. Ultrawide monitor provides stunning visuals from all viewing angles, making it ideal for more than one player.

Your friend or sibling will be able to sit on the other side of the room and still see the screen clearly. No clarity is lost, regardless of the size of the screen.

What size monitor should I get?

Another important consideration when picking a monitor is the screen size. Do you want a massive display or something unobtrusive that will fit neatly on your desk? As you can see from our lineup of the best monitor under 500 bucks, there are plenty of sizes to choose from, although most monitors are in the 22-inch to 27-inch range, with some bigger models hitting 32 inches.

TN Plane Technology

TN, or Twisted Nematic, plane technology is the ideal choice for PC gamers who want to get the best PC gaming performance possible. This is because TN panels work to ensure motion is delivered at its very best.

If you thought IPS monitors did this well, TN panels do it even better. This technology is pretty common among desktop computer monitors that have lower price points. It’s not as costly as in-plane switching models, allowing manufacturers to save in production.

With that being said, there are some downsides to this cost-effective technology. For one, the visuals are nearly as vibrant as what you’d find in an IPS panel technology. They aren’t bad by any means. But they aren’t as detailed, either.

Another aspect worth considering is the wide viewing angles found in TN panel ultrawide monitor. Whereas IPS panel technology allows for viewing from all sides, TN is best viewed from straight on. There’s definitely a noticeable loss in clarity when viewed from the side.

VA Plane Technology

VA, or Vertical Alignment, panels are notable for their ability to limit as much backlighting from bleeding through as possible.

This results in images appearing more naturally and lifelike. If you’ve used a backlit monitor for any amount of time, you’re likely aware of the brighter edges around the screen.

We don’t notice it as much in the inner portions of the screen. But it can cause monitor's image to lose their visual accuracy. A VA panel effectively resolves this issue by preventing the backlighting from distorting the images on-screen.

Blacks typically look much deeper, and colors in general often appear true to their real-world counterparts. This is an issue that’s not yet been fully mastered by other panel technology.

The downside, however, is that motion isn’t handled as well as other models. VA panels often display images with trailing effects during movement. For serious gamers, this can result in breaking the immersion and taking you out of the game.

As you can see, there are trade-offs with each of the panel technology. If you’re looking for the most balanced, however, you’re better off sticking with an IPS panel.

That’s not to discredit the other two types, as they each have something special to offer. You’re just sure to get a more well-rounded gaming experience with IPS panel technology.

How Long do Gaming Monitors Last?

On average, a computer monitor will last anywhere from 30,000 to 60,000 hours. This translates to anywhere from 10 to 20 years of use, assuming it is being accessed around eight hours per day.

Gaming monitors get worse over time due to their lights giving out and slowly dimming. Monitors may also start to experience screen burn-in and color fading as they get older. In some cases, pixels on the monitor may even die and leave permanent colored specks across the screen.

The short answer is that it depends on what you're using your computer for.

6. Are Ultrawide monitors good for gaming?

Ultrawide monitors are not everyone's cup of tea, but for those who like them (or are willing to be convinced), they can be a real blessing. Packing as much screen real estate as two monitors placed side by side, these displays are excellent for improving productivity and watching movies in their native, cinema-style.
