Best Laptop for Revit Buying Guide

The best laptop for Revit buying guide is as follows.

Central Processing Unit

Autodesk Revit is a resource-intensive software that needs a powerful processor. However, it would be best if you focused more on the clock speed instead of the number of cores.

The best laptops for Revit work well with AMD processors. AMD Ryzen Threadripper, Ryzen 5, and Ryzen 9 series have high clock speeds with a low number of cores. So, they can fit well in this description. However, if you prefer intel chips, I recommend 11th-generation intel chips. Like AMD Ryzen Threadripper, Ryzen 5, and Ryzen 9 series processors, they have high clock speeds and fewer cores.

processor

Here's how I determine the generation of a processor. I usually look at the digits after Core i5, core i7, etc. For instance, Intel Core i7-11800H is an 11th-generation core i7 processor. On the other hand, Intel Core i7-1065G7 is a 10th-generation core i7 processor.

Gaming laptops typically have higher clock speeds and are a good fit for Revit. So, don't be surprised if you see a gaming laptop in my review.

Graphics Card

Revit isn't that demanding regarding the graphics adapter. But this feature doesn't mean I neglect the graphics card for my laptop for Autodesk Revit. I still need a powerful GPU to display the model perfectly, zoom, and when panning.

A dedicated graphics adapter will help my laptop perform operations smoothly, especially when working with large files. Therefore, I recommend AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA graphics adapters. The bare minimum should be 4GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650, but to realize the best experience, I recommend a 4GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 GPU.

RAM

When working with Revit, I usually store large files and projects. These files take up much storage space on my local hard drive. Also, I need a large memory capacity when working with complex models with lots of families. At the bare minimum, I need 8GB RAM; otherwise, I should have 16GB RAM or higher capacities for the best experience.

computer memory

A general rule of thumb to determine the memory capacity you need for the best laptops for Revit is multiplying your RVT file size by 20. That means if my RVT file is 250 MB, I'll need at least 5GB RAM for the project only. This memory does not account for the memory I need for the OS and other programs running simultaneously.

Therefore, you should have at least 8GB of RAM, whether a student or a professional architect. However, I recommend 16GB RAM for mid-range projects and 32GB RAM for large RVT files.

Storage

The storage space requirement for Revit depends on the size of your project. Large models and projects require high storage space. But I prefer having enough storage regardless of the project size to ensure my laptop maintains a high performance.

I recommend SSD storage if you have Revit as your main design software. However, if you have other design software on your laptop, HDD storage works well. It provides enough storage capacity to accommodate your CAD files efficiently.

Laptop with code on screen

Display

The display of the best laptops for Revit is as crucial as any other specification. Here, I shall consider the screen size, resolution, and panel type.

  • Screen size: I need ample storage space to view contents on my Revit workstation efficiently. Therefore, I need a laptop with at least a 14-inch screen. However, for the best experience, I can opt for laptops larger than 15.6 inches.

  • Resolution: A Full HD display (1920 x 1080) works well with Revit. It ensures a sharp and accurate display, letting me view contents more precisely. However, there'll be no harm in upgrading to higher resolutions, provided you have the capacity.

  • Panel type: I recommend an IPS panel when working with Revit. This panel has accurate color reproduction, enhancing precision when working with Revit models. It also has wide viewing angles, ensuring a perfect view from all angles.

Keyboard

Revit requires a lot of typing. Therefore, I will need a good keyboard for the job. The best laptop for Revit should have an ergonomic keyboard that is comfortable to type. The keys should be well-spaced and fit well. Also, the keys should be easy to press. This feature allows me to type for long hours without hurting my fingers.

woman in a jumper typing

Touchpad

The best laptop for Revit should have a responsive touchpad. I will use the touchpad almost every time I work with my laptop.

Also, the laptop should have a touchpad at its central point. Through this feature, I can comfortably control the cursor while typing. Touchpads to the left or right of the laptop may be uncomfortable, so you should avoid them if other options are available.

Ports

While working with Revit, I'll need a lot of external connectivity. First, I need to connect the laptop to external hard drives if my local storage runs out. Besides, I need to connect the laptop to my phone when sharing files and other documents. Once in a while, I will also need to charge my phone using the laptop.

Therefore, my best laptop for Revit should have rich port connectivity. It should have at least one HDMI, one USB C, one DisplayPort, and two USB A ports.

Weight

I bet no one wants a heavy laptop. A heavy laptop is uncomfortable to carry around and may not be ideal for carrying when traveling.

Therefore, the best laptops for Revit software should weigh 4.0 lbs or less. The lightweight laptop design enhances portability; thus, carrying it around becomes effortless.

FAQs

What Laptop Specs Do I Need for Revit?

The laptop specs I need for Revit are Intel core i5 and 8GB RAM. Other system requirements include a Full HD 1080p display, 13 inches screens, IPS panel, 2GB NVIDIA GeForce MX250 graphics adapter, and 4 hours battery life.

How Much RAM Does It Take to Run Revit?

It takes at least 8GB RAM to run Revit. However, higher memory capacities provide a more enhanced experience. For better performance, consider 16GB or 32GB RAM and a laptop with long battery life.

Which Graphics Card Is Best for Revit?

4GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 is the best graphics adapter for Revit. It has a high graphics performance to ensure a smooth run of activities.

Since Revit software isn't graphics intensive, I recommend a graphics card that offers the best value for your money. If on a budget, you can consider mid-range graphics adapters like AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT and NVIDIA RTX 2060 SUPER, which run with dedicated battery life.

What Makes Revit Slow?

Several factors make Revit slow. One of the reasons is the multiplication factor. This feature runs all through when using Revit to keep up with the unit conversion. Consequently, the speed of Revit's operation drastically drops.

Third-party software and services also make Revit slow. When run simultaneously with Revit, this software takes up resources from the system, directly interfering with Revit's performance, and it can drain the battery life.

Windows vs. Macs?

I can't choose Windows over Mac or the other way around. This consideration comes down to you, the user. High-end PC and Apple laptops have features well furnished to run Revit and handle the challenges that come with it.

However, Windows laptops, especially Windows 10 PCs, are more user-friendly than Mac laptops. Besides, it supports a wide range of software. However, it is more prone to virus attacks than a Mac.
