Best Monitor for Sim Racing Buying Guide

The buying guide for the best monitor for sim racing is as follows.

Monitor Type

There are three monitor types for sim racing; single screen, an ultrawide monitor, and triple screen setup. This factor should be the first consideration when shopping for an ideal monitor for sim racing as it affects the other factors.

  • A single-screen setup is the regular 16:9 monitor with sufficient space to display all your sim racing information. Besides, it takes up minimum space in your room. However, this monitor form has a limited Field of View (FOV), which may limit your sim racing experience.
  • An ultrawide monitor has a wider field of view than a single-screen setup. It can have a 21:9 or 32:9 aspect ratio, giving you more horizontal space to display more content. This monitor setup ensures a wrap-around sim racing experience. However, ultrawide monitors for sim racing can have black bars at the screen edges. Their curvature can also limit you to immersive gaming only - not ideal for regular use.
  • A triple monitor setup has a wide field of view, letting you see more content while gaming on sim racing. This setup gives you an excellent view of your mirrors and cockpit. However, triple screen setup is complex, and setting them up may be challenging. Also, the bezels from one monitor to the next may affect my gaming experience. Luckily, I can quickly fix this mess with a bezel-free kit. Therefore, triple-monitor setups are by far the best for sim racing.

Refresh Rate

The refresh rate of my sim racing monitor determines the maximum frame rates at which the monitor can run sim racing. Higher FPS ensures images are smooth for a better sim racing experience. I recommend higher refresh rates, especially if you're planning to use your monitor for long.

30FPS is the bare minimum for smooth images. However, gamers should not go below 60FPS. But 120FPS and 240FPS are even better. They have the smoothest images, ideal for sim racing.

For a monitor to run at a desired frame rate, it must have a matching or higher refresh rate. Therefore, the minimum refresh for a sim racing monitor should be 60 Hertz. However, to ensure more image smoothness, I recommend higher refresh rates, such as in 144Hz monitors or even 240Hz monitors.

Screen Resolution

The screen resolution of your sim racing monitor will affect how sharp your picture looks. The screen resolution also dictates the amount of power your computer needs to run the graphics at maximum settings. Higher screen resolutions call for more CPU and GPU performance.

The bare minimum resolution for some racing is Full HD 1080p. This resolution produces sharp images on smaller screens. However, as the screen size increases, the image sharpness reduces gradually to appear blurred.

Many sim racing pros prefer 1440p monitors, the standard resolution for ultrawide monitors for sim racing. It ensures crisp images on relatively large monitors. There's no harm in upgrading to 4k 2160p resolution either. This resolution produces super-crisp images, ensuring a better gaming experience. However, you need a dedicated graphics card to run 4K resolution at full settings; otherwise, you'll be overworking your PC.

Panel Type

You're more likely to run into an LCD monitor when shopping for a sim racing monitor. However, the LCD monitors for sim racing feature different panels, as I have listed below.

  • Twisted Nematic (TN). A TN panel delivers a high refresh rate but has low color accuracy. You're most likely to find them in budget monitors for sim racing.
  • Vertical Alignment (VA). A VA panel is an intermediary between TN and IPS panels. They have accurate color ranges though not as good as what IPS delivers. However, they have varying refresh rates, depending on the model.
  • In-Plane Switching (IPS). An IPS panel is the ideal panel type for a sim racing monitor. It outperforms TN and VA panels in almost all aspects. They have the best color accuracy and wider viewing angles, ideal for sim racing. In addition, they have higher refresh rates for fast-paced games. However, IPS panels are more expensive than their counterparts.

Size

The ideal size for monitors for sim racing comes down to your preference. However, a 32-inch monitor should be the bare minimum for a single-screen setup. You can consider any other monitor between 32 and 42 inches.

An ultrawide monitor works best for sim racing if they are 34 inches or larger. However, you should extend past 49 inches.

Lastly, if you are considering a triple-screen setup, buy 27-inch monitors. Going for larger monitors will take up more space, and your field of view may be too wide and affect your gaming experience.

Response Time

The response time of my sim racing monitor determines how much lag the monitor experiences. Monitors with 5ms or lower response time typically don't have any lag. However, to ensure the best sim racing experience, I recommend a monitor with a 1ms response time. You shouldn't take any chances.

AMD FreeSync/Nvidia G-Sync

AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync reduce screen tearing and stuttering, producing a smooth gaming experience. Note that you're likely to experience screen tearing when the monitor's refresh rate doesn't match your PC's frame rates.

In instances where the FPS and the refresh rates don't match up, G-Sync or AMD FreeSync becomes resourceful. These technologies modify the refresh rate to match the PC's frame rate, thereby eliminating screen tearing.

HDR Support

Monitors with HDR technology have better color ranges. It allows my HDR monitor to accurately define light and dark areas and distinguish them appropriately. Thus, the image will be more accurate and with more vibrance.

Note that HDR isn't a must-have feature for sim racing. However, it ensures my game looks much better for an improved gaming experience.

Bezel Width

The bezel width is of little concern if I have a single-screen setup. However, the bezel width becomes a genuine concern in a triple-screen setup. When setting up triple monitors for sim racing, the monitor's bezels take up spaces between one screen and the other. Wide bezels mean more space left between monitors, thus distorting images or losing information. I recommend monitors with smaller bezels to avoid such messes.

Connectivity Options

Most gaming monitors come with a variety of connectivity options. They are likely to include HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB ports. While you'll always find connectivity options in most monitors, check what options you have. Rich connectivity offers more convenience when gaming.

Budget

The budget is always the deal breaker for most purchases. After going through all the specifications, the final decision always comes down to your budget. You can't get what you can't pay for. However, you should note that low-priced monitors are sometimes sub-par, and you won't get your desired sim racing performance. However, if you have the cash, go for a premium monitor with the best sim racing performance.

If you're on a tight budget, consider a 27-inch single-screen monitor with at least 1080p screen resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. Otherwise, you can flex a little if you're on a medium budget. A 27-inch triple-screen monitor with 1440p screen resolution and 144Hz refresh rate suits this bracket. However, you can opt for a 49-inch ultrawide monitor with 1440p resolution and 240Hz refresh rate for those on a high budget.
