Dell S2318HN Review | A High-Quality IPS LED FHD Monitor for All Purposes

Increasingly, I’m being forced to reconsider the definition of ‘cheap’ in the PC monitor world.  Monitors like the Dell S2318HN are continuously shifting the goalposts, redefining what it means to bag an absolute bargain.

Dell S2318HN: A Great Monitor at a New Low Price

The S2318HN is a high-quality IPS LED FHD monitor for all purposes, that proves you can spend next to nothing without compromising on performance. Inside and out, the S2318HN 23 IPS LED monitor delivers exponentially more than you would normally expect from this kind of money.

5 stars in almost all reviews, recommended by independent experts, and ideal for work (see also 'Best Computer Monitors for Work') and everyday gaming alike. A package that seems almost too good to be true for this kind of price, but is exactly what you are looking at in the S2318HN 23 IPS LED monitor.

The folks at Dell are understandably proud of the S2318HN, which is said to combine top-shelf features and technology with almost impossible ability.

As for its main points of appeal, Dell outlines the following as the biggest selling points for this all-purpose LED screen:

Expand your enjoyment

This refers to the exterior design of the S2318HN product, which features the kinds of super-slim bezels you would normally associate with a more premium computer screen. Thin bezels of this product also mean less to take your attention away from the 23-inch screen, which can only be a good thing (see also this 24-inch monitor by Dell).

Made to fit in and stand out

This is actually quite eloquently put by Dell, as the S2318HN is indeed elegantly understated. It is good-looking enough to be something of a statement piece but is nonetheless sleek and minimalist enough to fit perfectly into any room’s style or décor.

A beautiful view

1920 x 1080 full HD resolution is the order of the day with the S2318HN, which when crammed into a comparatively small screen actually adds up to a pretty impressive pixel density. The smaller the screen, the more bang for your buck you get with 1080p.

Easy on the eyes

Like its far more premium counterparts, the S2318HN is a TUV Certified screen with a flicker-free screen and ComfortView technology, which reduces strain on the eyes by filtering blue light. Often a priority for gamers, or anyone planning on spending hours on end in front of their computer.

And along with the above, all monitors from Dell (see 'Best Dell Monitor') come with the reassurance of 24/7 customer support and an extensive warranty, for added peace of mind.

Dell Model S2318HN IPS LED FHD Monitor: Put to the Test

Cutting right to the chase, the list of features and specifications the S2318HN brings to the table translates to a fantastic overall experience.

The 23" widescreen flat-panel IPS LED monitor with 1920 x 1080 resolution at 60Hz refresh rate adds up to super-crisp visuals from top to bottom, with the kind of pixel density and clarity that go far beyond what you would normally get for such a low price.

What is particularly impressive is how streaking, ghosting, and blurring are nowhere near as problematic as you would expect from a budget screen (check out our Dell SE2417HGR Review). The S2318HN has an approximate 6ms response time, keeping things smooth and sleek during even the most intensive motion sequences.

178° horizontal and vertical viewing angles mean an enjoyable experience from all angles, while the brightness (according to the manufacturer) tops out at 250 cd/m². This isn’t quite enough to eliminate glare in bright daytime conditions, but not to such an extent as to become a real problem.

Color reproduction is also fantastic, with brilliant blacks and whites adding to the already impressive picture quality, courtesy of an 8,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio (1000 1 typical).

In terms of inputs and connectivity, the VGA and HDMI ports are conveniently positioned, and the monitor is ENERGY STAR certified to reduce power consumption. The kit also comes complete with a premium quality HDMI cable, is it is ready to use right out of the box.

Dell Model S2318HN: In Summary

Style, sophistication, and simplicity in its finest form, the S2318HN delivers everything you can expect from a good everyday monitor at the right price.  What it lacks in top-shelf features it more than makes up for in almost impossible value for money.

Of course, you need to be realistic with your expectations when paying such a low price for a Dell display. In addition, the fact that this particular 23 IPS LED FHD screen has been around since 2017 means it is technically one of the older but one of the best products in Dell’s catalog.

Nevertheless, the fact that it can still give any number of comparable 2021 monitors a serious run for their money says all that needs to be said about it. Even today, 5-star reviews are the norm for the S2318HN. From work to gaming - see 'Best Gaming Monitor' review - to desktop video editing and so much more besides, it does the job exactly as a decent monitor should.

Just as long as you can comfortably deal with a comparatively small (by today’s standards) 23-inch screen, there is not much else about the Dell S2318HN to find fault with.
