The ransomware then encrypts all the data on your gadget and keeps adding extensions that make your data inaccessible. However, you can’t remove the predefined folders included by Norton’s algorithm. Some people can see such a choice as a limitation; nevertheless, if this means that my files is protected from ransomware, I am all in.
With Norton’s protection, it’s unlikely that you will have a ransomware issue; however, caution never hurts. I recommend you always keep your files backed up, whether to an online service or to an external hard drive.

After messing around with all the settings and options it has to offer, I can report that Norton’s Smart Firewall is among the top integrations in the security suite.
Before getting into details, a firewall is basically the gate between your computer and the internet. It controls any network-related traffic to and from your gadget. According to its predetermined set of rules, it grants access to or denies connection and data transmission between your computer and other devices on the web.
Understanding the basics is a nice segue to the first feature of Norton’s Smart Firewall. It gives you warnings related to any suspicious connection attempts. You’re notified when another computer tries to establish a connection with your device, and you’re given the option to abort immediately. Also, you will become aware when an installed program attempts to gain access to your data without your knowledge.
Moreover, the Smart Firewall offers protection against an infamous hacking technique known as port scanning. It’s a method by which hackers target the weak spots on your network: open ports. So, Norton hides the unused network ports and keeps them out of the reach of any exploits.

Moreover, another technique known as Memory Layout Randomization Enforcement ensures that the apps running in the background load in different locations of the memory minimize the chance of exploits.

Despite the unrivaled popularity of cloud services, I have been on the fence for a long time to confide in having my valuable data on the cloud. I can’t deny the convenience of having everything backed up and ready so that I don’t lose my files if my HDD malfunctions or becomes corrupted. However, I was still skeptical about the level of security I would get until I decided to try Norton’s Cloud Backup feature.
Let’s start with the basics: the amount of storage you get. The good part is that you don’t have to commit to a separate cloud service and pay a separate fee every month. You already get access to online storage with any of your Norton’s subscriptions.
Norton Antivirus Plus promises 2GB of storage, whereas Norton Security Premium offers up to 500GB. I believe even with the most expensive plan, the storage I get isn’t enough to recklessly back up everything to the cloud. I had to pick and choose the most important files that I can’t risk losing and upload only those. The takeaway is I wish Norton would offer more adequate storage options.
There’s still much to like about Norton Cloud Backup. You get unhindered access to your content from any device, and you don’t need to have your computer on you all the time to get to a file that you need.
As I mentioned before, ransomware can be a real issue. By having all your irreplaceable information safely backed up on the cloud, you won’t have to worry about your files falling prey to ransomware. Norton even lets you choose specific folders on your hard drive, and those folders will be backed up automatically, keeping your backup on the cloud updated.
Finally, I don’t doubt that my backups on the cloud enjoy the same reliable protection Norton offers to my local, on-device files. If you were hesitant to follow the cloud trend like me, I’d recommend you give Norton Cloud Backup a try, and it can really change your mind.

The most crucial feature that Norton antivirus offers and I don’t believe is getting enough spotlight, is the user-friendly interface. During my experience with Norton antivirus, I do really appreciate how minimalist the interface is. It only notifies me when there is a major, real-time security concern and guides me through the proper actions to take. Moreover, the detailed reports are there whenever I decide to check them at my own pace instead of continuously being shoved in my face when I’m not ready to review them.
Another key feature that matters to me as a parent is the parental control tool. Bringing up kids in the age of the internet can be a challenging feat since we don’t have much control over what our kids experience online. Norton decides to change that by allowing us to monitor what sites our kids visit, in addition to blocking inappropriate or harmful content.
You can also set a screen time limit to a particular device so that your kids don’t spend excessive time on their devices. I believe the best way to wrap up my review is by looking at how Norton compares it to other antivirus companies in the antivirus space. Spoiler alert: Norton puts up an excellent fight and proves to be among the top options for your information security.
To start with, Avast stands toe to toe with Norton in terms of its industry-standard high scores. They both deliver real-time protection against malware, ransomware, and phishing.
It’s worth noting that Avast offers more options and settings when it comes to information and network security customization. This won’t make a huge difference to the average user; however, businesses can make use of the extra layer of control Avast delivers for a more secure work environment.
When it comes to the user interface, Norton has the edge over Avast, thanks to its modern, clean, and user-friendly interface. I found some difficulties adjusting to Avast’s outdated design. Don’t get me wrong; both still get the job done; however, Norton does it with style.
Next up is McAfee! Both antivirus software giants offer excellent protection, though Norton’s scores slightly outperform those of McAfee. Furthermore, I believe McAfee’s family plans offer more value. You can have up to 10 devices covered at a better price than Norton’s Ultimate Plus package.
Though McAfee nails the multi-device plans, it falls short at how it offers some of its extra services, like premium VPN coverage and identity theft protection. You have to agree to auto-renew your subscription to have access to these antivirus features. Norton propose such services as part of your membership without having to commit to a long-term plan.
Kaspersky takes multiple device support to a whole new level. You can get up to 20 devices covered, making Norton’s family plan pale in comparison. However, Kaspersky is less flexible with its subscription plans. You can only sign up for one, two, or three years at a time, unlike Norton antivirus software, which offers monthly plans.
