26 Options Considered

Getting a monitor with built-in speakers makes sense whether it is out of convenience, to save desk space, or you just want to save some cash. However, as of March, 2024, just in the past year there are over 11 new monitors with speakers that have been released. That is a LOT of new product and it is difficult to know the right one to buy. In fact, 40% of online buyers are unhappy and end up getting a refund.

In fact, the first monitor with speakers I bought 3 years ago actually had the right speaker completely blow out in less than 2 months. Sure, I skimped out and bought a monitor under 150 bucks, but I was still super frustrated about it. And no, the monitor didn't have a warranty for the speaker.

Fortunately for you, I (along with our stellar team) have done the research to know what the best monitor with speakers is and I’ve provided that information for you below. We've tried and tested over 20 options over MONTHS to make sure that the monitors not only look great, but still sound and work great during the duration. At the bottom of the article you can see more about our ranking and judging criteria.

So, you want a monitor with speakers built-in? That is understandable. There is a certain amount of convenience to be gained from having speakers already come with your monitor and not having to acquire external ones yourself. Even some of the models in our portable monitors reviews and top rated 24" monitors come with speakers. That said, if you are trying to save some money, you should know that budget monitors usually don’t come with speakers.

You won't have to go through the added effort of setting them up, ensuring that their settings are to your liking. With speakers built into the monitor, all that work is done for you and all you have to do is adjust the volume. Get a reliable computer monitor arm for maximum multimedia enjoyment.

Alternatively, you can get the best gaming monitor that fits your budget and complement it with a quality pair of speakers for maximum enjoyment.

DO NOT expect awesome loudness but have in mind that we ARE reviewing both monitor itself and the speakers in synergy. There are some of the best monitors for a PC with no speakers at all, while others from our LED monitors reviews are easier on your eyes, so you can opt for those models if you find the built-in speakers to be a sub-par sound solution. In addition, check out our BenQ monitors lineup.

Why Get a Monitor With Speakers?

There are several reasons to get a monitor with speakers. Perhaps you spend a lot of time traveling with your machine? If so it would be awfully convenient to just have speakers in your monitor and save yourself from having to lug around another piece of equipment. Maybe you have a limited amount of space on your workstation and you just don’t have the room for extravagant speakers. Love watching movies at home? This is a fine solution, although if you're really passionate about movies, you should definitely pick the best monitor for movies.

Whatever your situation, the reason for getting a monitor with speakers is clear; it is convenient, just like the #1 in our best HP monitor lineup. They are compact and take up no extra space whatsoever. Buying a monitor that already has speakers saves you cash and space and time. What more reason could you need?

Unfortunately, that convenience does come at a cost. Monitor speakers are lower in sound quality than external ones or even headphones, so to mitigate that issue I have already provided evidence to show what the best monitor with speakers should have below. If you are a gamer and these monitors just don't do it for you, you might consider checking out how these monitors compared to freesync monitors we reviewed. However, having speakers in the models we went over in our curved monitor reviews will be an additional perk.

The S3219D is a Dell monitor with speakers and has a very large screen size of 32 inches. It is a 1440p monitor which means it has a maximum resolution of 2560 by 1440 and has an aspect ratio of 16:9. It is an LED monitor that uses a VA panel type.

This is the first option so far with a well-implemented speaker option. Dell has implemented 5-watt speakers into the frame of this monitor that are professionally tuned by MaxxAudio. These should serve quite well no matter your use or work area. I was very impressed with these.

I am very familiar with being disappointed by monitor speakers, so much so that I usually don’t even give them a chance, but these were a very pleasant surprise. I still wouldn’t use them as my primary audio option, but I wouldn’t be disheartened by having to use them as a backup.

The specs for this monitor are decent which is more than could be asked for considering the size, resolution, and price of this monitor. It has a 60 Hz refresh rate which is low for PC gaming but should be perfect if you like to game on a console. The 5 millisecond response time is less than ideal but manageable for casual gaming.

It also has compatibility with FreeSync which should help smooth out some of the negative symptoms of having such low specifications. AMD GPU users will be quite pleased with this monitor’s performance.

It is fully VESA compatible which, combined with the thin frame, makes this a good option as a primary display in your configuration, especially if you plan to mount it on a wall. It also comes with a USB 3.0 hub that I found very useful for charging my phone.

The connectivity options are HDMI and DisplayPort, either of which should be fine but DisplayPort is preferred.

If money is no object then I would say this is the best monitor with built in speakers on this list.

The Viotek GN24CB is a gaming monitor with a screen size of 24 inches. It can reach resolutions up to 1920 x 1080 and has an aspect ratio of 16:9. It is a VA style panel type, LED monitor. This is a curved monitor option which is certainly interesting.

The speakers on this monitor are ever so slightly better than the previous two options at 3 watts. They should have slightly more power which should result in a higher maximum volume or higher quality of sound. I felt that this one was slightly easier to hear but the overall quality was the same. These should serve well enough in a situation where you have no other options, but you will still need a mostly quiet area if you want to be able to hear them with any clarity.

It is a gaming monitor which means it should work quite well for PC gaming as well as console gaming. It has a 4-millisecond response time which isn’t ideal but should be sufficient for casual gaming, no matter the system. The refresh rate is where this monitor really shines. 144 Hz is ideal for gaming on powerful machines and it also has FreeSync which should link your refresh rate to your framerate and keep things nice and smooth.

The GN24CB is compatible with VESA mounting and it has thin bezels which makes it a fantastic choice for a multiple monitor configuration at your workstation. You can mount it on a wall conveniently or in a VESA multi-display stand if you prefer. Either way, this should be a convenient option for any configuration.

It also comes with a low blue light mode which should help to protect your eyes from harmful blue light emissions while playing or working for extended periods. This is especially important for users that work with their monitors for extended periods very frequently because exposure to too much blue light can cause lasting damage to your eyes. I am on my computer for most of the day, every day, and I have noticed a steady decline in the quality of my vision over the years.

This is the first monitor option with DisplayPort compatibility, and it is a good thing too because HDMI has trouble supporting higher refresh rates. To get the most out of this monitor option you will want to use the DisplayPort option for connectivity.

Developed by HP, the VH240a is an HP monitor with speakers and has a 23.8-inch screen size. Resolutions up to 1920 by 1080 are supported as long as they match its 16:9 aspect ratio. It uses an LED for light and has an IPS style panel type, a setup that is more thoroughly explained in our IPS vs LED technology review.

This HD monitor is an example of one of those that just have speakers tacked on as a good afterthought. They are 2-watt speakers which means their max volume will be quiet and the quality of the sound will be good but very low. If you usually use your machine in a completely silent area then these might work for you but most users will find that they need another audio option.

Fortunately, the monitor itself is quite good outside of the speakers. It has several features to increase your quality of life when working with it. It has a wide viewing angle to reduce eye strain when you are viewing the monitor from an angle instead of head-on. It also makes use of anti-glare screen protection so that you don’t have to be as careful about the light in your work area.

The VH240a has a thin frame that should make it more convenient to use in a multiple display configuration. It has the added benefit of making the monitor look much more attractive.

It is also VESA compatible so mounting it on a wall or a multi-display stand should be easy and convenient. It also comes with a stand that can adjust monitor's height for the most comfortable view possible no matter the configuration of your workstation.

As far as gaming is concerned this monitor should work fine for console gaming but I would not recommend it for use with a PC. It has a refresh rate of 60 Hz which should be perfectly fine for a console as they don't operate at framerates higher than 60. The response time is 5 milliseconds which is on the lower end of acceptable speeds for gaming but should be fine for casual play. For competitive gamers consider 120hz.

It comes with compatibility for VGA, HDMI, and HDCP connectivity options. HDMI and VGA are fairly common so you shouldn’t have any trouble connecting this monitor to a device of your choice. This should serve as an excellent hdmi monitor with speakers.

The 323E7QDAB from Philips Computer Monitors is another massive monitor option with a screen size of 32 inches. This option maxes out at a HD resolution of 1920 by 1080 and has an aspect ratio of 16:9. The panel type is IPS and it is an LCD monitor.

32 inch monitor by Philips

This monitor option also implements 5-watt speakers and performs almost as well as the previous monitor option from Dell. While using this monitor I noticed that the overall volume was comparable to Dell’s option, but the quality of sound was definitely lower with this one. It had a bit of a tinny undertone and very little bass. That said, it should serve just fine if you are lacking for other options and I am still impressed with this built-in speaker option.

The specs for this monitor are not impressive, but they are serviceable. It has a 60 Hz refresh rate and a 5 millisecond response time.

This monitor is VESA compatible for wall mounting or multi-display configuration. It has flicker-free technology implemented to reduce eye strain as well as a wide viewing angle in case you aren’t looking at it head-on.

It is compatible with VGA, DVI-D, and HDMI. The DVI-D port is the preferred mode of connection but any of them should be sufficient. This is another good example for computer monitors with built in speakers to emulate.

This monitor does have a common IPS problem with backlight bleeding. Dark colors, especially blacks, tend to glow which can be distracting and detract from the overall viewing experience.

BenQ has developed the GW2780 with a respectable screen size of 27 inches. The maximum resolution of this monitor is 1920 by 1080 and it has an aspect ratio of 16:9. It uses an LED for light and has an IPS style panel type.

Unfortunately, BenQ did not take the time to implement a good set of speakers with their monitor. We are back to the 2-watt nonsense which is highly unfortunate because this is an otherwise decent monitor.

It is qualified for gaming if only barely, with its 60 Hz refresh rate and 5 millisecond response time. It should be plenty for a console gamer and a PC gamer can get by using this monitor.

If you are looking for a monitor with built in speakers and hdmi compatibility, the G247HYL from Acer could be a good option. The screen size is 23.8 inches and it has a 16:9 aspect ratio with a maxed-out resolution of 1920 by 1080. It is an LCD style monitor with an IPS panel type.

This monitor exhibits many of the typical problems with monitor speakers. Unfortunately, these are also low-quality speakers that were added just for advertising. They are also 2-watt speakers and they suffer from the same problems as the previous option. I work in a fairly quiet area, silent most of the time, and I had to strain to hear with any clarity even when at higher volumes. As far as monitors with built in speakers go, these did not impress but for the money, you can't go wrong with this model.

The specifications for this monitor are decent, but nothing spectacular. It has a refresh rate of 60 Hz which, like the previous option, is ideal for console gaming, there shouldn't be any visual artifacts. The response time is decent at 4 milliseconds which should result in a minimal delay.

There is an option to activate “overdrive” mode which supposedly increases the response time to 3.1 milliseconds but you have to be careful when using things like that because they often result in an overall reduced visual quality.

The monitor is VESA compatible and it has an average frame thickness which makes it a good choice for a multi-display configuration.

It is compatible with DVI, HDMI, and VGA for connectivity options which is excellent as far as compatibility with most devices goes. DVI is the highest quality connectivity option here but any of them should work as the specifications of the monitor aren’t very high end.

These speakers are also unimpressive and leave a lot to be desired. They are the same standard, cheap, 2-watt speakers.

Ignoring the speakers, this monitor is very versatile and should serve well in a multitude of purposes. It has decent specs for gaming with a 75 Hz refresh rate and a 4 millisecond response time. It implements good eye care technology. It is VESA compatible and has a thin bezel for your convenience.

It is compatible with HDMI, DVI, and VGA. Any of these should be fine but DVI is preferred.

Features to Look For in the Monitors With Built In Speakers?

The main thing to look for when looking at the speakers built into a monitor is the wattage. Some monitors with built in speakers are, quite frankly, terrible. Most of them come with 2-watt speakers which might be able to project enough volume for your operating system sounds, but if you are expecting to watch a movie or listen to music with them you will be sorely disappointed.

You want to find speakers that have a higher number of watts. Something closer to 5 or higher would be better, but that isn’t always possible and it shouldn’t be more important to you than the specifications of the monitor itself. There isn’t much point in getting a monitor with great speakers if you aren’t going to be able to see what you are working on or enjoy entertaining yourself, now is there?

What NOT to expect from These Displays

Unfortunately, monitors just don’t come with specialized speakers that will please the audiophile in you. Finding speakers that are merely adequate for most purposes will be an achievement. Do not expect to find monitors with speakers that have a rich sound quality and a thumping bass, because you are just going to disappoint yourself.

Monitor speakers are often just an afterthought tacked on at the end of production so that the marketers can say their monitor has another feature. Your job, and the one I’ve done for you here, is to find the monitors where that isn’t the case. You want to find a monitor that had attention paid to their speakers, ones that were chosen for functionality rather than a cheap price point.

Other thing to look out for are:

  1. Panel Type
  2. Size and Design
  3. Refresh Rate and Response Time
  4. Brightness and Color Accuracy
  5. Resolution

Benefits of Integrated Speakers

Convenience is the number one benefit of having a computer monitor with speakers. Having the speakers already built into your monitor helps in several areas including cable management, workstation efficiency, and aesthetic.

When you are setting up your computer at your workstation you are inevitably going to have a lot of cables going every which way, all over the place, and it will likely look like a disorganized mess by the time you are done with cables hanging everywhere. If you have a monitor with built in speakers then that is a few more cables that you don’t have to worry about organizing.

Your desk is where the majority of your work is going to get done. Making sure things are neat and organized is an essential task in getting the most productivity and efficiency out of your work area. Speakers are a hassle that you will have to constantly deal with. Unless you have a computer monitor with built in speakers, then you have all of that extra space to work with and you don’t have to have them taking up space that could be better used by something else.

Finally, aesthetics. Everyone enjoys their things looking good. There’s a certain sense of pride that comes when someone sees something you put together and comments positively on it. The same thing is true for your workstation. If impressing other people doesn’t do it for you then do it for yourself. You work hard, you deserve to have a place to work that is pleasing to the eye. Speakers tend to be big and bulky, but if they are built into the monitor then they are heard and not seen.

Overall Quality of Picture and Sound

If you have speakers built into your monitor then you are placing the burden of image quality and sound solely upon the shoulders of your monitor. If a monitor is developed with this in mind then it will likely suffer from a jack of all trades, master of none, kind of quality. The more emphasis is placed on one side of the equation, the less attention will be paid to the other which essentially means that the better the sound quality is, the worse the image quality will be.

The only way to get around this problem is to spend exorbitant amounts of money to get a monitor that has it all, and nobody wants to do that. It would certainly be much cheaper to just buy external speakers at that point. No, the idea here is to find something that is going to be affordable, while also performing to an acceptable standard of quality in both areas.

Are There Gaming Monitors With Speakers?

You can certainly find a gaming monitor with speakers but they will usually be the kind that just have them tacked on as a marketing ploy. Fortunately, if you are a gamer you shouldn’t have to worry too much about speakers since you are likely to already have a headset that you use while playing them.

With that in mind, there are certainly options out there that will have acceptable quality for serving as a backup or temporary audio option in the interim while you find something better. It is unlikely that you will find phenomenal speakers on a good gaming monitor, however, because the really good ones will assume that you are pairing them with an equally good headset.

What to Take Into Consideration

The most important thing to keep in mind if you are trying to avoid breaking the bank is that quality comes at a cost and that you should research a product before you buy it because if it sounds too good to be true it usually is.

If you find a monitor that sounds like it has everything you could ever want, with all the bells and whistles, for a cheap price then you should do yourself the favor of researching the product yourself to ensure that it is what it says it is.

FAQs:

1. Should I buy monitor with speakers?

Monitor With Built-In Speakers Perfect For Gaming And Movie Watching. While it is true that you should invest in a separate audio system if you are an audiophile, if you are looking for a set of decent and loud enough speakers for work, we recommend purchasing a monitor with built-in speakers.

2. Do all HDMI monitors have speakers?

No, not all HDMI monitors have speakers. Some monitors have internal speakers, while others require an external audio source like a soundbar or headphones to produce sound.

3. How do I know if my monitor has speakers?

There are a few ways to tell if your monitor has speakers. One way is to look for a port on the back of the monitor that has a symbol of a speaker. Another way is to check if there are any holes on the front or sides of the monitor that indicate where the speakers are. If there are no ports or holes, then your monitor most likely does not have speakers.
