Optimization for All Tools
The IntelliScale Architecture is the complete approach for Network Intelligence Optimization, providing full coverage across the entire ecosystem of network intelligence tools, whether they are active or passive. This includes all types of analytic tools, inline security appliances and inline WAN accelerators.
The IntelliScale Architecture also delivers the reliability with its self-healing and multi-levels of system fault tolerance. Built-in at the device, link, and system levels, the IntelliScale fault tolerance ensures no single point of failure. As well, the IntelliScale distributed approach is inherently more reliable and self-healing than monolithic approaches
The IntelliScale Architecture has four system components:
- vEngine: Line-Rate Traffic Intelligence
- vNode: Purpose-Built Appliances
- vMesh: System Scalability Interconnect
- vManage: System Control
vEngine: Line-Rate Traffic Intelligence
vEngine is a broad set of traffic intelligence features implemented in vNode hardware to run at line-rate speeds. vEngine's feature sets are used to:
- Groom traffic for optimized distribution to tools
- Offload tools and get more out of them by pre-processing packet
- Increase network and tool assurance
- Enhance traffic visibility, beyond what tools can provide
vEngine's hardware-based capabilities operate at the full line rate of each network link, currently up to 10 Gbps. Each vNode can provide an aggregate throughput of up to 230 Gbps, and beyond that, the vMesh interconnect can add almost unlimited throughput and scale to the vEngine feature set.
vEngine is implemented in both passive and active vNodes (features sets differ according to application). Features are enabled as required, and are offered in pre-packaged bundles: Basic, Advanced, and Expert.
vNode: Purpose-Built Hardware
vNodes are hardware devices, purpose-built for network intelligence optimization. They physically interface between the network intelligence tools and the network switching/links. There are two general types of vNodes - passive or active - depending on the network intelligence tools they are optimizing.
Passive vNodes optimize passive network, application, and security analytics tools. These vNodes TAP into the network traffic by connecting a network link on a pair of vNode inline ports or by connecting to a SPAN port.
Active vNodes optimize inline WAN acceleration tools and inline network security tools. They attach inline to the network traffic by connecting a network link on a pair of vNode inline ports.
vMesh: System Scalability Interconnect
vMesh is the interconnection capability of vNodes that enables flexible system configurations, providing much of the self-healing resilience and almost unlimited scale of VSS systems.
vMesh Configuration of Interconnected vNodes
vMesh connects vNodes together (up to 63 in a single system) in a true mesh over many different types of IP connectivity - tunneled or open - where sections of the mesh can be separated by various disparate network types and/or large geographical distances. vMesh does this all reliably and securely.
vMesh configurations are created by the standard and enhanced implementations of the VSS patented vStack+ inter-node meshing protocol. Utilizing the stacking capability of the vStack+ protocol, vMesh can create Local Area Networking Meshes. Utilizing the newly enhanced versions of vStack+, vMesh adds native support for Wide Area Network Meshing, adding new levels of reliability and scale the VSS systems.
vManage: System Control Software
vManage is system management software providing highly secure and highly available control of the VSS system.
vManage provides a variety of options to manage vNodes, both locally and remotely, including by Graphical User Interface, Command Line Interface, and SNMP manager. The GUI offers an exceptionally simple and intuitive method of managing port settings and vEngine features like complex filtering, output aggregation mapping, and load balancing setup. Network traffic statistics are also viewable through this user-friendly interface.
